Attorney Robert P. George, Of Counsel to Robinson & McElwee PLLC and Princeton University’s McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, received the Presidential Citizens Medal at a ceremony at the White House on December 10. A distinguished constitutional scholar, George is the director of Princeton University’s James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions and a member of the US President’s Council on Bioethics. Last spring he received the Heritage Foundation’s $25,000 Salvatori Prize for American Citizenship for embodying the virtues of America’s founders. He was selected in November as the US member of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology, an advisory board of the United Nations. The Presidential Citizens Medal was established in 1969 to recognize US citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service for the nation. It is one of the highest honors the President can confer upon a civilian, second only to the Presidential Medal of Freedom. George was recognized for bringing analytic clarity to the study of America’s ideals and institutions by exploring enduring questions of American constitutional law and Western political theory. He previously served as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights and as a judicial fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States. He is the author of several books, including In Defense of Natural Law, Making Men Moral: Civil Liberties and Public Morality and Embryo: A Defense of Human Life. In his work at Robinson & McElwee, George has represented clients on matters involving constitutional law, international law, federal appellate practice, and legal ethics. Robinson & McElwee is one of West Virginia's premier law firms. The firm's five departments, Corporate, Energy and Environment, Government Relations, Labor and Employment, and Litigation are oriented toward the representation of business clients. The firm maintains offices in Charleston and Clarksburg, West Virginia.
